He holds a PhD in Communication Sciences from ISCTE-IUL and is a journalist. He has been a lecturer in higher education since 2000 and a member of the Faculty of Human Sciences at the Portuguese Catholic University since 2018. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Media Studies from the School of Social Sciences and Humanities of NOVA University of Lisbon, a Master’s degree in Communication, Culture and Information Technologies and a postgraduate qualification in Journalism, both from ISCTE-IUL. He also holds the title of Specialist in Journalism, awarded following public examinations by a consortium of polytechnic higher education institutions led by the Polytechnic Institute of Lisbon. From 1984 to 1989, he worked for the news agencies ANOP and Lusa. He then joined the founding team of the daily newspaper Público, remaining on the editorial staff until 2016 and holding the roles of coordinator and editor at different times. He is the author of articles published in indexed academic journals. His Master’s thesis, which examined the newsworthiness of the 1999 East Timor crisis, was later published as a book. His primary research interests focus on journalism, journalism history, ethics of communication and media literacy. He has conducte research on the press of the the late colonial period in Angola and has participated in research projects on Portuguese media coverage of elections in Portuguese-speaking countries. He is a member of the Technical and Pedagogical Council of Cenjor – the Training Centre for Journalists – representing the Journalists’ Union.
