On 30 September, the Solistas da Metropolitana will participate in CECC’s Close Listening concert at 18h30, in Auditorium 1. Each work will be introduced by one of the musicians; after the concert, there will be a conversation between the musicians and audience members, moderated by Sara Eckerson. The purpose of this conversation is to constitute an exchange of ideas on musical meaning, historical context, performance practice, and aesthetics rarely offered in a concert setting.
The program will span four periods in the history of music: Baroque, Classical, Romanticism, and 20th Century Music. The works performed will be as follows:
- Johann Sebastian Bach – Aria from the Orchestral Suite No. 3, in D Major
- Joseph Haydn – Quartet No. 62 in C Major, Op. 76, no. 3, “Emperor Quartet” – First movement, Allegro
- Franz Schubert – Quartet No. 13 in A Minor, D 804, Op. 29, “Rosamunde” – First movement, Allegro ma non troppo
- Dmitri Shostakovich – Quartet No. 4, Op. 83, 3rd movement, Allegretto
Performed by the Solistas da Metropolitana:
- Alexei Tolpygo, 1st violin
- Ágnes Sárosi, 2nd violin
- Irma Skenderi, viola
- Ana Cláudia Serrão, cello
The Close Listening: Concert with Commentary and Conversation series aims to bring together scholars, students, staff, and other members of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa – in addition to being open to the public at large – to listen to music and discuss music at a proximity that is typically only reserved for specialists or musicians.
The event will be held in English and Portuguese.
