PhD in Communication Studies

Program Description

Widely recognized within the academic and scientific community, the PhD in Communication Studies at the Faculty of Human Sciences (FCH) offers advanced and rigorous training in the study of contemporary communication processes, set within a context defined by the growing centrality of mediatization across social, political and economic life. With a strong interdisciplinary orientation, the Doctoral Program immerses students in a vibrant and intellectually stimulating environment, dedicated to research excellence and to advancing understanding of human communication, as well as of the ways in which the production, management and reception of communication flows shape individual and collective decision-making.

The Doctoral Program is distinctly international in outlook. Alongside a highly distinguished and diverse academic staff, it organizes the Lisbon Winter School for the Study of Communication each year, in partnership with the Center for Media@Risk at the Annenberg School for Communication, and in collaboration with the Annenberg Schools of the University of Southern California and the University of Pennsylvania, the School of Journalism and Communication at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the Institute for Social Sciences and Humanities at the University of Helsinki, and the Europaeum network.

Throughout the program, doctoral researchers acquire a robust set of theoretical and methodological skills that enable them to design and carry out original and impactful research projects. These projects are embedded within the work of the Centre for Research in Communication and Culture (CECC), internationally acknowledged as an innovative research hub and rated Excellent in the most recent national evaluation conducted by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). As a program of recognized excellence, the PhD in Communication Sciences offers up to three fully funded doctoral scholarships each year.
