As part of the Translation of General Spanish Texts course, second-year students from the Undergraduate Degree in Applied Foreign Languages (LEA) visited Teatro Aberto in Lisbon on April 22.
A landmark in contemporary theatre, Teatro Aberto has played a significant role in theatrical translation in Portugal since its founding (by Grupo Quatro in 1976 and by Novo Grupo de Teatro in 1982) and remains one of the few national institutions to include the role of dramaturg.
Guided by Célia Caeiro, the visit offered students the opportunity to explore the life of a play beyond the written text, from wardrobe to archive. Throughout the session, students gained insight into how theatrical translation intersects with the human, technical, and material dimensions that shape the transition from page to stage.
This initiative reinforces the practical component of the LEA program by providing direct contact with the professional field and contributing to the development of translators with strong cultural awareness and the ability to act as mediators between languages and contexts.
FCH-Católica would like to thank Novo Grupo de Teatro for their hospitality and to mark Teatro Aberto’s 40th anniversary with best wishes for its continued success.
