Social Work and Human Rights

4 ECTS / Semester / Portuguese

The approach to Human Rights in the context of the Social Work profession has as its main objectives:

  • The understanding of the socio-historical context that led to the constitution of societies of rights and the proclamation of Human Rights enshrined in the UDHR.
  • To make known the main historical figures of Social Work who fought for the defence and guarantee of Human Rights.
  • To identify and get to know the international conventions that stem from the UDHR and that are fundamental in the contexts of intervention in Social Work.
  • Identify the main international documents and guidelines on Human Rights for Social Workers.
  • Place the defence of Human Rights within the current framework of the European Union and in Portugal.
  • To promote reflective thinking on the place of Human Rights in the ethical framework and in the context of intervention in Social Work.
  • To develop critical thinking and debate on the challenges that the promotion and defence of Human Rights poses to Social Work in the contemporary world.
  • To base and promote the necessary skills for an intervention in Social Work based on Human Rights.
  • To contribute to an ethical and human rights-based intervention and approach in Social Work.
