The ninth session of the “Reading Music” series, which will take place on June 16 in the Timor Room at 4:30 p.m., will be dedicated to Ezra Pound’s music and poetry criticism, as compiled by R. Murray Schafer in the anthology Ezra Pound and Music: The Complete Criticism (1977). The text will be presented by Ph.D. candidate Alyse Fan and moderated by Sara Eckerson.

The session will begin with a brief presentation by Ph.D. candidate Hajer Khader El Bizri on Umm Kulthum, based on the group’s previous discussion of Edward W. Said’s “Memory, Solitude, and Affirmation.”

The goal of these sessions is to discuss selected readings that illustrate specific methods of describing music as a way to unravel the meaning of an art form often considered enigmatic (or reserved solely for specialists).
