Anthropology of Power and Violence

To define the basic concepts of this curricular unit, from the framing of violence to power in the public realm. To understand and to problematize the characteristics attributed to war and violence in classical antiquity taking Plato as the main reference. To understand and to problematize the relationship between power and violence in modernity according to Machiavelli, Locke and Rousseau. To understand and to problematize the changes in the configuration of violence since World War I, taking Hannah Arendt as the main reference. To understand and to problematize the distinction between violence and totalitarian terror according to Hannah Arendt. To understand and to problematize the relationship between terror and post-culture according to George Steiner. To understand and to problematize terrorism as a new phenomenon of violence, taking Slavoj Zizek and Zygmunt Bauman as the main references.
