Media History

6 ECTS / Semester / Portuguese
Objectives:
 
  1. To present the evolution of the media in the political, social, economic and cultural context between the 15th and 21st.
  2. To analyse the historical development and transformations of the media through their technical dimensions and performance regarding the socio-political and cultural sphere.
  3. To problematize the constitution of public opinion and media practices in the public space in the 19th and 20th and its reconfiguration with the Internet and New Media.
  4. To discuss the convergence – technological, economic, content – of the media and its implications at the level of participatory culture.

Student competencies:
  1. Situate the media and their problems in time, space and historical context.
  2. Problematize and relate the concepts of Media; Public Sphere; Imagined Community; Public Opinion; Journalism and Platform Society.
  3. Interpret and analyse media development from a historical perspective.
  4. Discuss on contemporary media.
