Media Discourse Analysis

6 ECTS / Semester / Portuguese

This course invites students to explore media discourse from the perspective of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), examining how language shapes and reflects social, political, and cultural realities. Students will become familiar with the concept of discourse as it applies to traditional and digital media, while developing an understanding of the relationship between language, power, ideology, and identity.

Throughout the course, students will examine a range of media genres and communicative contexts, learning to analyse how meaning is constructed through linguistic and multimodal resources. Key concepts such as genre, lexicalisation, presupposition, intertextuality, interdiscursivity, recontextualisation, and multimodality will provide the analytical tools needed to investigate contemporary media texts.

Particular attention will be paid to news and digital discourse, political communication and strategies of legitimation, social movement discourse, hate speech, and populist discourse. By the end of the course, students will be able to apply the CDA principles and methodology to critically evaluate media texts and understand how discourse contributes to the construction and representation of social identities and realities, the negotiation of power, and the circulation of ideologies.
