Profiles written by four FCH-Católica students as part of the Sports Journalism module on the Undergraduate Program in Communication and Cultural Sciences and the Postgraduate Program in Sports Journalism have been published in the newspaper A Bola.
On September 14, the newspaper published postgraduate student Vasco Félix de Oliveira’s profile of sprinter Pedro Afonso. Entitled Pedro Afonso: "Os campeões são esquecidos, quem deixa um legado é sempre lembrado", the piece introduces the 19-year-old athlete, who has already won silver in the 200 metres at the European Under-20 Championships, competed at the senior World Championships and broken almost twenty national records. Yet he prefers to discuss ideas rather than times, medals or dreams.
The following day, the newspaper published Hugo Leal: "As expectativas eram dos demais, não minhas". The former Portugal international was one of the most promising footballers of his generation, beginning his career at Benfica before going on to play for clubs including Paris Saint-Germain and Atlético de Madrid. Speaking to Mariana Sousa, an undergraduate student taking the Sports Journalism course, he explained that football can teach us far more than what happens on match days.
On September 16, the newspaper published undergraduate student Margarida Simões’s profile of Mário Aníbal, a multiple national decathlon champion and national record holder whose only dream was “to keep getting better”, an ambition that took him all the way to the Olympic Games in Sydney. Entitled “O homem que nunca sonhou com os Jogos Olímpicos”, the piece tells the story of the former athlete, who remains involved in the sport.
Finally, on September 17, the newspaper published student Sofia Pinto Cascais’s profile of tennis player Pedro Sousa, who reached the world’s top 100, contested an ATP final and represented Portugal at the Tokyo Olympic Games. “Pedro Sousa, o jogador que voltou sempre” tells the story of a career built on fresh starts.
