Statistics for Social Sciences

6 ECTS / Semester / Portuguese
Objectives:
The course is an introduction to statistics that aims to provide the fundamental techniques of analysis of quantitative data and apply those techniques to real situations. Students will acquire fundamental tools in order to continue their studies in statistical analysis. Students will be enabled to use the SPSS [Statistical Package for the Social Sciences] data analysis software.

Competencies:
- Make descriptive and exploratory analysis of a sample data;
- Construct and interpret frequency graphs;
- Calculate and interpret measures of central tendency and other measures of tendency;
- Calculate and interpret measures of absolute and relative variation;
- Calculate and interpret measures of skewness and kurtosis;
- Analyze paired data with contingency tables and measures of association;
- Perform a descriptive statistical analysis with the SPSS program;
- Understanding the concept of a random variable and the special cases of the normal and binomial distributions.
