Audiovisual Archives

6 ECTs / Semester / Portuguese

This CU intends to familiarize students with the history and everyday reality of audiovisual archives, using the RTP (Portuguese public television service) and the Cinemateca’s film archive as case studies. The several dimensions of archival images will be explored, namely the material nature of the audiovisual media, the challenges of their conservation and access, and the legal, ethical, and institutional issues relating to the re-use of archival images by the public. By the end of the semester, students will know how to identify the main thematic collections of each archive, be familiar with issues of conservation and preservation of filmic, videographic, and digital media, as well as the specific access regulations and the most common re-use practices of the footage held in these archives.
