In November 2023, the Master's and Doctoral classes in Translation visited the newsroom of Agência LUSA to explore and reflect on the role of translation in the production and communication of news.
The visit began with an introductory session by journalists João Pedro Fonseca and Paulo Alves Nogueira on various topics relevant to the field of translation studies: the mediating role of the news agency, LUSA's international network of journalists and subscribers, the ethical and formal principles of journalistic writing and, finally, the two types of translation carried out at LUSA. On this last topic, the diffuse and varied rewriting processes involved in the (re)creation of international news content in Portuguese were discussed, as well as the Portuguese-English translation of the telexes published on the LUSA News website.
After a lively debate between journalists, professors and students, the group toured the facilities of the Agência LUSA and exchanged thoughts with journalists from different departments.
For Rebeca Henriques, a master's student in Translation, this visit was essential to "understand the impact of translation on the news, the care taken in transmitting information and the perspective of those who receive it". Ana Bezerra, also a master's student in the same program, says that visiting Agência LUSA made her "reflect on the dialogue that exists between Translation and Journalism", as it allowed her to "understand the figure of the journalist as a Translation agent, who when carrying out his activity is dedicated not only to analyzing the linguistic aspect but also the cultural context of the news".
