The curricular unit aims at developing student knowledge about the main theoretical positions on cultural representation through the study of the systems of representation. The study of the production and circulation of meaning through language is designed to foster competences of cultural analysis, within the concept that culture is more than a set of things (such as novels, painting, music or TV programs) also represents a process and a set of practices. Through the study of representations, students develop competences for the interpretation of shared meanings in the same culture and a better understanding of the way cultural meanings organize and regulate social practices, influence our conduct and consequently have real, practical effects. The study of different theories of representation and of different case studies, both in time and space, should contribute to developing awarenesses around difference and "the other" and a better understanding of the instruments that have built and legitimized discursive formations that led to specific "regimens of truth".
