Professor Jane Duarte, received the Innovative Teaching Award for her project ‘Journalist meets Translator in the EFL/Translation Classroom’, in the ‘Digital Learning Technologies’ category. This is a pilot and interdisciplinary project developed in the curricular units of English Language IV and Generalised English Translation, as part of the degrees in Communication and Cultural Sciences and Applied Foreign Languages, respectively.
The main aim of this project is to promote interaction between journalism and translation in order to gain a greater understanding of the relationship between language and representation in news production. Through the critical analysis of news texts, translation/post-editing exercises and rewriting exercises, the project aims not only to improve students' linguistic and discursive skills in English and develop their critical capacity, but also to raise awareness of the role of journalists and translators as “gatekeepers of information”. In a context where disinformation, fake news and artificial intelligence are playing an increasing role in the content creation process, understanding these challenges is essential for the future of the communication and translation professions.
The awards will be officially presented during the international conference ‘Enhancing Professional Excellence: Synergy of Academic and Non-Academic Staff’, at the Vitaltus Magnus University in Lithuania, between April 9 and 11.
