Discursive Practice in Foreign Language Teaching

6 ECTS / Semester / Portuguese

The main, general objective of this seminar is to understand the social dimension of discourse and concomitant discursive practice; and how the latter are subjected to pre-existent power relations in society; last but not least, how the aforementioned power relations and social dimensions of discourse are present in the foreign language classroom. Therefore, the specific objectives of the seminar are:

  • To understand and put into practice the fundamental concepts from discourse analysis applicable to language teaching and learning
  • To recognise and describe “school discourse” and its variations
  • To understand and apply the CLA concept
  • To understand the relevance of language policy in the discourse of foreign languages teaching and learning
  • To devise and develop linguistic materials applicable to the foreign language classroom
