Ana do Carmo holds a Bachelor's Degree in Translation and Interpreting (French and English, from I.S.L.A, Lisbon), a BA degree in Modern Languages and Literature (Portuguese and German Studies, from the Open University, Lisbon) and a MA degree in German Studies (from the University of Lisbon).

In September 2011, she joined the Lisbon Consortium Doctoral Program in Culture Studies of the Catholic University of Portugal and, in February 2014, the European PhD-network "Literary and Cultural Studies" at Justus Liebig University (JLU) Giessen.

Her doctoral thesis investigates the "transnationality of cultural memory" by contrasting the literary representations of two forced migrations: the flight and expulsion of the Germans from the former "Eastern Germany" during and after the Second World War with the "return" of the Portuguese from Africa after the Carnation Revolution in 1974.
