Joana Vaz de Castro

Generic Bio

Joana Vaz de Castro is an Otorhinolaryngology (ORL) specialist since 2017, has competency in Sleep Medicine by the Portuguese Ordem dos Médicos (OM), and is also certified in Sleep Medicine by the European Sleep Research Society (ESRS) since 2020.
She is a PhD student of the Neuroscience doctoral programme of the Faculdade de Medicina of the Universidade de Lisboa.
She is a board member of the OM college of Competency in Sleep Medicine since 2021.
She is a researcher of the Instituto de Saúde Ambiental (ISAMB) of the FM-UL and the Comprehensive Health Research Centre (CHRC) of the Nova Medical School (NMS/UNL). She is collaborating with the Icelandic team in the European Project Sleep Revolution.
Is a firm believer of a multidisciplinary approach to sleep pathology and works with various sleep teams in the Centro de Electroencefalografia e Neurofisiologia Clínica (CENC), the CUF Almada/Sintra and in the Hospital das Forças Armadas (HFAR).
Part of the organization of 4 meeting in sleep medicine, invited speaker for 2 international congresses in sleep medicine, 11 publications.
Main research interests are: Anatomy and vocal characteristics of snoring and sleep apnea patients, with a focus on oral breathing and its impact in pediatric craniofacial growth.
