João Biscainho (Portalegre, 1979), is an artist and curator. He is currently a PhD candidate in Culture Studies at The Lisbon Consortium, Universidade Católica de Lisboa. He was awarded a doctoral scholarship by the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia for his PhD thesis “Energy In The Ethereal Regions. When Art Merges With The Hertzian Space”.
From 2012 to 2017 he was assistant curator at the Leal Rios Foundation where he was responsible for curatorial projects, exhibitions and collection management. He has a Degree in painting from the Faculdade de Belas Artes de Lisboa (2006) and a Masters in museology from the Universidade Nova de Lisboa (2012), with the thesis “Experiencing Cinema”: Exhibition and Conservation. In search of “authentic perfomance”.
In 2009 he created Gate Galleries at Imagegate Lda. the first contemporary art guide in Portugal, a project he directed until the end of 2011. As an artist, his work has been exhibited in individual and collective exhibitions in venues such as SE8 Gallery (UK); Galeria Municipal do Porto (PT); Galeria Quadrum (PT); Fórum Braga (PT); Carpe Diem Arte & Pesquisa (PT); Fundação Carmona e Costa (PT); Whitechapel Art Gallery (UK); and Luís Serpa Projectos (PT) among others.
