Conference marks the 200th anniversary of the Constitutional Charter and the 50th anniversary of the Constitution

Thursday, June 11, 2026 - 12:26

In 2026, Portugal will celebrate two landmark dates in its constitutional history: the bicentenary of the 1826 Constitutional Charter and the 50th anniversary of the 1976 Constitution of the Portuguese Republic.

To mark this double anniversary, the Literary Council is organising the conference “The bicentenary of the Constitutional Charter and the fiftieth anniversary of the Constitution”, dedicated to reflecting on the historical and legal legacy of these two fundamental texts of Portuguese constitutionalism.

The session will include presentations by Guilherme d’Oliveira Martins, President of the Literary Council, who will discuss the 1976 Constitution, and Professor José Miguel Sardica, a member of the Literary Council, who will analyse the 1826 Constitutional Charter.

The conference will take place on 18 June, at 6.30 pm, at the Grémio Literário, providing an opportunity to reflect on two fundamental milestones in Portuguese constitutional history.
