THEMATIC SEMINAR I: «Modernity and Post-modernity in the thinking of Ortega y Gasset»

At the end of the seminar, students are to: understand Ortega's diagnosis of Spain's cultural, political and social situation at the beginning of the 20th century; grasp the motives that led Ortega to look for the assimilation of modern culture as the solution to Spanish problems; know about the fundamental moments in Ortega's philosophical training in Germany; acknowledge the importance of Ortega's meditation about Wilhelm Worringer's book The Fundamental Problems of Gothic Art; identify Ortega's criticism of modernity in Europe and particularly in Germany, regarding its scientific culture and its rationalist philosophy; understand the motives for departing from neokantianism and turning towards phenomenology; understand the role played in this turn by his reflection on Spanish painting of the «siglo de oro» and the paintings of Zuloaga; take a critical stance regarding Ortega's diagnosis of modernity, his relations with post-modernity and his thesis about «Mediterranean culture».
